Toward a world with zero food waste | Technican’s support of 7 SDGs

Report

Technican’s TOMIN rapid liquid-freezing technology can freeze fresh ingredients immediately after they are produced, harvested, or caught. We believe that our technology, which makes it possible to deliver delicious frozen food anywhere at any time, supports 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs) that would transform our world. Below, we explain how TOMIN can contribute to the SDGs as a whole through the following seven goals.

7 SDGs supported by Technican’s technology

2. Zero hunger

End hunger, achieve food security, improve nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture.

6. Clean water and sanitation

Ensure the availability and the sustainable management of water along with sanitation for all.

8. Decent work and economic growth

Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment, and decent work for all.

9. Industry, innovation and infrastructure

Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization, and foster innovation.

13. Climate action

Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts.

14. Life below water

Conserve and promote the sustainable use of the oceans, seas, and marine resources.

15. Life on land

Protect, restore, and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat deforestation, halt and reverse land degradation, and halt biodiversity loss.

Elimination of drip loss reduces food waste

2. Zero hunger + 15. Life on land

One in nine people around the world suffer from malnutrition, and yet approximately 1.3 billion tons of food is wasted every year. According to a report released by the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations), such food waste accounts for one third of the food produced throughout the world.

Technican’s freezing technology can curtail the amount of food waste by almost entirely eliminating drip loss.

For example, frozen meat usually produces drip loss of 4–5%. This means that from 1 million tons of frozen meat, 40,000 to 50,000 tons that should have been consumed is discarded. With TOMIN technology, none of this 1 million tons of meat would be wasted. Every ounce of this important frozen food could be consumed.

Prevent pollution of waters and make good use of seasonal ingredients

14. Protect the abundance of the oceans + 6. Clean water and sanitation

When drip loss makes its way into the sewage system, it could also contaminate the ocean. Thus, in addition to locking in delicious flavor, the elimination of drip loss also removes this source of pollution.

Furthermore, Technican’s freezing technology prevents the destruction of food cells, enabling long-term storage in a way that preserves quality. The ability to store food for long periods of time enables the accumulation of stock.

As an example of the benefit here, consider that seafood is seasonal and that market prices fluctuate accordingly. When catches are plentiful, the market price will be at its lowest. If seafood can be frozen and stored, it can be retained and sold out of season and at premium prices.

TOMIN freezing technology makes long-term storage of fresh-caught fish possible, so fishermen can catch in season and sell their supply all year round. The surplus of a harvest can be frozen to maintain its original fresh flavor, mitigating food waste and preserving natural resources. We believe that this will support the conservation of marine resources.

Reliable supply leads to stable earnings and work

8. Decent work and economic growth

Long-term storage creates a constant and consistent supply of resources throughout the year, which in turn creates steady income for those who work in a related industry.

Businesses no longer need to worry about shipping costs and loss of quality during shipping. In addition, they can establish new sales channels and sell their goods online. Additional revenue can be generated by rapidly freezing products that can usually only be consumed where they are harvested or produced, as these products can be sold as rare ingredients and can be delivered to remote areas.

Reducing carbon emissions through a modal shift to sea and rail transport

13. Climate action

Long-term storage eliminates the need for expedited shipping. With freshness maintained, rush shipping of perishables by air freight or road can be dispensed with. Freezing and transporting in bulk makes enables shipping by rail and sea, which are more environmentally friendly than other modes of transport. This modal shift for freight transportation will reduce carbon emissions.

High aspirations for the medical field

9. Industry, innovation and infrastructure

Meat-thawing trials have yielded outstanding results, suggesting that there are applications for TOMIN in the medical field. Medical institutions have begun to make inquiries about the technology, and research is already underway.

Technican could alter the future of our planet

Food shortages due to population growth and natural disasters associated with climate change are growing ever more severe. Securing and stockpiling a safe supply of food could eventually provide a lifeline.

As a pioneer in liquid freezing, Technican aspires to support the lives of all humans, to be mindful of the future of the planet, and to guarantee food quality and good health.
